- Announced by the Korean Association for Supporting the SDGs for the UN, a special consultative body for the UN Economic and Social Council, ranked the company at the top and acknowledged it for sustainable management performance

- Highly regarded for creating social value with its core businesses such as global amino acids R&D and eco-friendly bio projects

CJ CheilJedang announced on the 15th that it has been ranked No. 1 in the 2018 UN Sustainable Development Goals Business Index (SDGBI) for the past 2 consecutive years.

The UN SDGBI is a concept that expanded the sustainable management evaluation index of firms to all the fields of economy, society and environment. It is evaluated based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which represent the biggest joint development goals of the international community and were initiated in 2015 with the participation of 193 UN member states for coexistence and development of humanity in the world.

Marking the third anniversary this year, the UN SDGBI was analyzed and announced by the Korean Association for Supporting the SDGs for the UN, which is a special consultative body for the UN Economic and Social Council. It analyzed 500 major companies and public institutions in Korea that are able to meet the selection criteria for a year beginning last October, and 156 of them were admitted into the index. A total of 7 companies ended up in the No. 1 group, including CJ CheilJedang, KT, Samsung Electronics, POSCO, SK Hynix, Lotte, and Hyundai Engineering.

CJ CheilJedang received glowing praise for its core businesses such as global R&D of amino acids and eco-friendly bio projects as efforts that create social value. The company was most notably recognized for contributing to the resolution of poverty and food security by conserving grain resources necessary for livestock breeding with amino acids for livestock such as lysine.

The company’s contribution to improving the livestock environment by reducing nitrogen emissions of livestock and global environmental pollution, and to preventing desertification of many countries based on a range of bio R&D also received positive feedback. Furthermore, CJ CheilJedang also fulfilled corporate social responsibility through ‘Joy of Growing Together,’ which is a win-win growth platform with small- and mid-sized enterprises that are partners of the company.

CJ CheilJedang’s eco-friendly bio business has been acknowledged as the UN’s exemplary model for SDGs in March 2016, which was a first for Korean companies. Later that December, it was recommended as the exemplary action model of the Korean Association for Supporting the SDGs for the UN, and the recommendation was adopted as the official opinion of SDGs at a committee meeting attended by high-level officials from 39 countries. This July, CJ CheilJedang received the UN SDGs Action Award at the Korean ceremony of the UN High-level Political Forum (HLPF).

“The fact that we are ranked No. 1 at the UN SDGBI carries great significance, because it proves that CJ CheilJedang’s sustainable management has earned global recognition,” said an official at CJ CheilJedang. “We’re going to expand our sustainable management activities so that not only the eco-friendly bio business but also other various businesses proportionately receive a favorable evaluation in terms of economy, society and environment.”

Meanwhile, CJ CheilJedang’s sustainable management is continuously garnering recognition in both Korea and overseas aside from the award. Last month, it was included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia/Pacific Index, a feat it attained for 4 consecutive years, making it a first among Korean food companies. The company also received the highest rating for 3 consecutive years in the Win-win Growth Index evaluation announced in June, selected as the ‘Best Win-win Growth Honorary Company’ [p1] and considered the leading company of sustainable management.
