R&D Center

The CJ Research Institute of Biotechnology was established in 1984 as a CJ Group affiliated institute devoted to the development of bioproducts. It is one of the major R&D centers which CJ CheilJedang founded to support its Life Sciences business, as one of its core business areas. Since its foundation, the CJ Research Institute of Biotechnology has greatly contributed to building a solid base for CJ CheilJedang in becoming a global company in the bio industry.

CJ Research Institute of Biotechnology is generally renowned as an institute equipped with global competence in the industrial biotechnology area. It won many awards conferred by the government for excellence in BIO technology. The major products of the institute have won awards such as “the World’s Best Products” from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (L-lysine in 2001, nucleotides in 2002 and L-threonine in 2003). The technology for L-threonine production, developed by the use of microbial genomics, also won the award for “The Korean Top Ten New Technology” from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2002.

The CJ Research Institute of Biotechnology developed the world's 1st technology in producing Methionine through the fermentation process. Biotector® is the world's 1st bacteriophage feed additive product for treatment of Salmonella gallinarum and Salmonella pullorum. Currently, the research center seeks to develop bio-based platform chemicals, which will be the core business of CJ in the near future. We are applying for 30 to 40 domestic and international patents annually and through innovative research now hold more than 300 patents.

The CJ Research Institute of Biotechnology is enabling and maintaining CJ CheilJedang in becoming the global leading company in the industrial biotechnology business. It strives to be a world leading-research institute in the industrial biotech area by both consistently building-up its core competences and building strategic R&D partnerships with major global institutes or players.

Awards

  • 2010 : Biotector® was awarded the Jangyeongshil Award by the Korea Industrial Technology Association.
  • 2003 : Threonine was selected as the ‘World’s No. 1 Product’ by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.
  • 2002 : Nucleotides were selected as the ‘World’s No. 1 Product’ by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy. L-threonine production technology was selected as one of ‘Korea’s 10 New Technologies in 2002’ by the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Energy
  • 2001 : Lysine was selected as the ‘World’s No. 1 Product’ by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy
